Why do people believe in mysticism

People always believed in signs - bad, negative, or, conversely, predicting a happy scenario. Archaeologists find confirmation of this strange fact even in the caves of primitive tribes in rock paintings. And today, belief in omens remains strong, despite the fact that we live in an era of constantly undergoing scientific and technological transformations and technological innovations.

Behindirrational thoughts *in our brain one of its regions is responsible, and for their correction it is completely different.

Irrational thinking *- incoherent train of thought, not having a strictly built logical chain and based on assumptions and feelings. Irrational thinking arises from a person’s desire to believe in their fantasies. In turnrational thinking is different from the irrationalthat it is based on logical arguments and facts for reflection and decision-making.

Psychologists have explained the tendency of man to believe in supernatural phenomena even when their nature was refuted before their eyes.This is described in an article in the journal Psychological Review.

"Even when all conditions are ideal for a person to notice a mistake in his reasoning, and when a person has all the motivation and ability to behave rationally, magical intuition still wins," Jane Reisen from the University of Chicago quotes RIA Science .

Many of the sports fans are quite rational, and sometimes unbelieving people, but when it comes to the matches of their favorite team, most have their own set of rituals and take it with "supernatural powers."

The psychologist decided to uncover the roots of superstitions, the absurdity of which people are fully aware of and, nevertheless, continue to believe in them. He observed the behavior of several such people and tried to describe the work of their psyche using a mathematical model. As the psychologist explains,a person can think, figuratively speaking, in two ways - “quickly” and “slowly”. Under the first concept, scientists imply intuitive thinking, which allows us to quickly and easily get out of life situations and make immediate decisions, and under the second, a more energy-consuming way of thinking, which basically works by correcting errors of the first. The relationship between religiosity and nationalism

Scientists believe that the fact that superstitions continue to dominate the human mind, even if he understands their fallacy, suggests that not one, but two regions of the brain are responsible for the work of "slow" thinking. The first of them is responsible for the recognition of errors, and the second - for their correction. The connection between them can be influenced by those parts of the brain that are responsible for the work of intuition, interfering with the exchange of information between them.

This explains why many sports fans behave very superstitiously, and managers in large companies often make irrational decisions.

Rational thinking- a process, not a result. This way of thinking is the ability to build logical chains, draw appropriate conclusions and make decisions. The desire to think rationally is a positive factor for working on your own shortcomings. Guided by logical reflections, a person does not act spontaneously, thereby excluding unpleasant surprises. Rational thinking allows a person to see things in its true light, explains the inexplicable, calms and shows the shortest way to achieve the desired result.

This method helps to focus on one goal, which is currently considered paramount.To learn to think rationally, follow these guidelines:

  • Every reflection, start with the search for proven facts. Sometimes it is difficult to do, but without them it is impossible to build a logical chain that will lead to the right conclusions and the right actions;
  • In thinking, be guided by the fact that your point of view (as well as those around you) may be wrong. Ask friends about their vision of this fact;
  • Do not judge the actions and behavior of people only by external manifestations. Do you think that a friend avoids communication with you? What are your conclusions based on? On logic or assumptions? Clarify the truth, do not speculate. Find confirmation that they are avoiding you. Maybe a person is in trouble, and he seeks to limit communication with everyone. He is not up to you;
  • Do not think out the phrase for your opponent, do not imagine what he thinks about. Listen attentively to the interlocutors, and perceive only what they tell you;
  • Doubt the sincerity of the words and actions of man? Talk directly by making claims and asking questions.

1. Scientific explanations of superstition.

Why does a person believe in omens? Obviously, he is trying to make his life more predictable and connects events that occur directly with him, with the forces of nature and what is happening around him. Such a relationship is usually explained in hindsight. If necessary, the omen is even thought out or “fitted” to this or that situation.
Belief in omens is one of the directions of scientific analysis today, especially psychological developments. The psychology department at Harvard University received a grant to study attitudes towards the superstition of different groups of people. It turned out that almost all of us are inclined to believe omens. This is due to the need of man to adapt to the world around him and at least to some extent manage him.
Believing in signs, a person gets the effect of "self-fulfilling forecasts." If you believe in the good, then tune in to positive events and are more likely to get them. And vice versa. To know this effect is useful for self-tuning.

2. Why do superstitions prolong our lives?

English scientists have come to an interesting result. According to a sociological survey by Professor Stella McGuire, a superstitious mindset is an excellent adaptive response of a person. In superstitious people, life expectancy is much longer than skeptics.So, almost all of the interviewed respondents over the age of 90 are very superstitious.
Psychologists try to understand the reasons for the longevity of superstitious people and believe the following:
Belief in omens develops care and caution in a person. Superstitious people behave with heightened prudence and will never allow an action if there are any danger signals. In addition, superstition relieves a person from feeling guilty for failure or failure in any important or not so important matter. It is enough to remember that in the morning the cat crossed your path, and you can safely transfer everything that happened after the trouble to the unfortunate animal. The cat will not suffer from it?
