When Ilon Musk founded SpaceX, everyone thought he was insane.
Not only is space exploration - an industry dominated by governments, so absolutely nothing to understand in space technology and at the same time to believe that you can help stimulate progress, at least, boldly.
Over the years, however, these initial doubts began to evaporate, as Mask’s favorite project got sponsors. SpaceX did seemingly impossible, and doubts turned into curiosity.
Considering how close Musk was to high technologies, he is often asked how he learned so much about rockets.
What does he answer?
"I read a lot of books."
This answer will make many of you laugh. Take up aerospace research as a hobby because I read a lot of books ... Normal people don't do that.
But this is not so incredible. We have all heard stories of how people we admire ascribe much of their success to their thirst for knowledge and love of books.Even in our own life, we all have events closely related to reading books.
Favorite children's book. Inspiring Writer. The same novel.
However, I do not think that most people fully understand how sometimes what we read strongly determines who we become.
Incoming forms outgoing
Language is the main tool of our communication. With it, we build and organize our knowledge, and it allows us to interact with each other.
In addition to getting direct experience, it also influences how we create our perception of reality. The information that the senses absorb from the environment helps to create a linguistic (and subconscious) model of how the world works in your mind and to choose the best way to interact with it.
In part, this happens through verbal conversation or listening to something, but for most of the useful knowledge and for the average person in developed countries, this is a direct result of what we absorb.
You are what you read. The information that you feed your mind affects your way of thinking and the decisions you make, the work you do, and the interactions that are present in your life.
This is a huge incentive to prioritize and plan time to think about what and how you feed your brain and whether you read exactly what will bring you closer to the success you want to achieve. This is the reason to stop and think about whether you can do something to purposefully shape the direction of your mind.
Naturally, quality does not necessarily mean quantity. The correlation between how much you read or consume and what you can do or who you can become begins to level off after a certain point, and more is not always better.
This suggests that the quality of the prevailing power sources and their importance cannot be overestimated.
No time to read?
Many of us lead a busy life filled with a huge amount of commitment, and can not always find the time to read.
Or can they?
Perhaps for a very small number of people this is the right statement. For most of us, though, this is just an excuse. Often we don’t think at all about how we spend our time and what we can do with it.
In fact, most people reading this article stumbled upon it completely, trying to kill time, and at the same time it seems to them that they do not have time during the day to read what they want.
Naturally, I want more people to stumble upon my article, get something from it and continue reading, so this is not a complaint. Nor do I think that reading what I write is a waste of your time.
The fact is that even when we think we don’t read, we read.
When we spend 20 minutes scrolling through our Facebook feed, we read. When we decide to click on an interesting link from a dubious news source, we read. When we hang aimlessly on the Internet, we read.
The only difference is that this kind of reading is not intentional. This happens in our daily turmoil, and it is not only a waste of time, but also quite often adversely affects how we see, feel and analyze the world.
Reading should not be something that happens to you. This should be something that you actively do. This must be done consciously.
If you think you don’t have time to read, you may need to think twice.
Over the past ten years, the number of books published per year has doubled.
In 2020, 10 times more books will be produced than were produced in 2013.
We live in an era of information overdose, and the ability to distinguish value from noise is becoming an increasingly important quality.
The effects of reading are not always obvious, and as a result, many of us do not always pay attention to what our brain processes, and we are simply satisfied with any distraction that gives us peace. This is not the way forward.
One of the most important skills in your life is how you think. This applies to everything: from what you create, and ending with how you see the world. In your hands - improve it by consuming valuable information.
This does not necessarily mean that you should exclude everything that is not practical or does not directly relate to your life. This is what awareness is all about.
Eliminate aimless viewing, meaningless news and social networks. Add classics, read good fiction and learn from deep-minded people.
The quality of your thinking depends on it.
