Insomnia in children: the main causes

The nature of sleep changes throughout a person’s life. According to statistics, approximately 25% of children aged one to five years suffer from insomnia.This is due to the fact that the nervous system of the child is immature, so many factors can prevent the baby from sleeping peacefully.

Today we will talk about the main causes of insomnia in children, about what is dangerous insomnia, as well as how you can improve your baby’s sleep.

What is the danger of insomnia?

The danger of insomnia for children is that it is in a dream that growth hormone is produced, and if the child is not sleeping, he may have problems with physical development.

Also, due to insomnia in babies, logical thinking suffers, children no longer cope with the tasks for which they need to use ingenuity.

That is why in no case should we ignore the child's complaints of insomnia.

Stress - the main cause of insomnia

The causes of insomnia in a child can be very many, but among all the reasons, the leading positions are occupied by the causes of emotional stress.

For example, insomnia in a child can cause:

- mental injury (for example, death of a pet);

- quarrels and diseases of parents;

- moving;

- noisy companies;

- meeting a lot of new people;

- other factors.

It is important to note that not only negative emotions, but also strong positive emotions can cause insomnia in a baby. For example, if a child is presented with a pet, he is unlikely to sleep well on the first night of the new pet's stay in the apartment, as the baby will constantly think about how the new resident feels there.

What else can cause insomnia?

In infants, teething, colic, regurgitation can be the cause of insomnia.

Also, insomnia in older children can cause:

- Worms invasion, as they provoke severe itching in the anus;

-sonic infections, as the fluid that is formed as a result of the infection, in the prone position, puts pressure on the eardrum, which causes discomfort and wakes up the baby;

- new skills: some kids, having only learned to get up or walk, cannot quickly adapt to new skills, so they try to get up in the crib at night and then do not know how to lie back;

- Excess of physical activity during the day: this condition is often called the word "rebel", it is characterized by strong excitement of the child;

- a dramatic change in the mode of the day, for example, if you have taught your baby that after evening bathing you should be fed and then sleep, then if suddenly you don’t redeem it, it’s likely that he will not sleep well;

- rich imagination of the child: often the little ones imagine that a terrible monster lives under their bed or in the closet, usually such invented images scare the children and prevent them from falling asleep;

- other reasons: sometimes loud extraneous sounds can interfere with the baby's sleep, for example, the sounds of neighborly repairs, the light entering the room of a child from the street, in such a situation you can try to eliminate the adverse factor that prevents the child from sleeping.

Important!Sometimes nightmares can cause insomnia, in such a situation, the child is just afraid to fall asleep.In this case, you need to talk to the child, ask him about what he dreamed of, try to overcome fear, drawing it, for example. If a child often has a nightmare with one plot, it is better to take the baby for a consultation with the doctor.

How to improve the sleep of the baby?

1.Create for the child a contrast between the state of sleep and wakefulness. Let the day be filled with laughter, loud sounds, bright light, and towards evening, let the sounds become quieter, the light dimmer. Soon the child will remember that the muffled light is a signal for a quick sleep.

2.Make sure your child’s bed is comfortable. According to statistics, a third of complaints of poor sleep are associated with an uncomfortable bed.

3.Try to make sure that the baby does not interfere with sleep extraneous sounds and lights from the street.

4.Before going to bed you can have a relaxing massage for your child, hold breathing exercises with your child, this contributes to a good sleep.

5.Aromatherapy is also useful: you can turn on an aroma lamp in a child’s room, buy a herbal pillow for him or make a bath with aroma oil.To improve sleep, it is recommended to use the following oils: mint, lavender, rosemary, needles, rose.

If, despite all your efforts, the baby’s sleep does not return to normal, contact your doctor for help, perhaps he will prescribe a safe and effective sleeping pill for your baby or suggest another alternative therapy.
